Sacramento City crews work nonstop to respond to Sunday night's storm

Sacramento, CA (February 6, 2024) - City of Sacramento crews have been working nonstop to respond to hundreds of calls for service following Sunday night’s wind-and-rain storm.

The storm, which brought an inch and a half of rain and winds of more than 60 miles per hour, caused widespread power outages and downed branches and trees that blocked streets.

As of Monday morning, the City had received approximately 400 calls for service involving trees.

“Currently we’re prioritizing requests related to public safety and traffic concerns,” said Gabby Miller, a spokesperson for the City’s Department of Public Works. “Residents should continue to report downed trees to 3-1-1.”

In preparation for the storm, the City over the weekend activated a field operations center at its South Area Corp Yard. Nearly 200 employees from the City’s Department of Utilities worked rotating 12-hour shifts to provide 24-hour response to the storm.

The City’s Office of Emergency Management also monitored the storm closely and worked with City departments to coordinate response.

Since Sunday, DOU staff have cleared nearly 1,400 drains so areas did not become inundated from the rain. In addition, power outages affected more than 50 stormwater pump stations and required DOU crews to activate backup generators to keep the stations operating.

Meanwhile, the City over the weekend also extended weather-respite operations at its Outreach and Engagement Center to assist the public.

As City crews continue to work on clean-up, the City is asking residents to place as much debris as possible in their organic waste recycling bins. A household junk appointment can also be scheduled for excess yard waste.

The National Weather Service is forecasting continued rain on Monday with a chance of showers for the rest of the week. City crews will continue addressing requests for service in the coming days.

A list of frequently asked questions is available on the City’s website for people to help determine what to do if a tree or branch is affecting their property.
