Upcoming elections

The District 2 seat is one of four City Council seats currently up for election in Sacramento this March. Election winners traditionally are sworn in by the end of the calendar year.

However, Mayor Darrell Steinberg and the City Council have agreed that if a candidate running for the District 2 seat wins by more than 50% of the vote in March, the Council would appoint that person to the position immediately following the election rather than waiting until November. If nobody wins a majority — meaning the election goes to a runoff — the Council intends to appoint a caretaker member to occupy the seat. This caretaker will NOT be one of the candidates in the general election.

Anyone interested in the interim appointment — even the candidates currently running — must submit an application. There are no exceptions.

The City’s Personnel and Public Employees Committee is expected to hold interviews of qualified applicants for the interim position in the second week of March. Interviews will be held in the community with the public invited to attend.

Following the interviews, the City Council will vote in public to select the person for the interim position. Swearing in for the interim councilmember is expected to occur in early April.

If you need assistance with the application process, please contact the City Clerk’s Office by emailing clerk@cityofsacramento.org or by calling (916) 808-7200.
