City moves to to require vaccinations for all employees
Sacramento (Aug. 13, 2021) Mayor Darrell Steinberg Friday requested that City Manager Howard Chan immediately require vaccinations of all new City employees before they start work. The requirement would apply to non-public safety and public safety workers alike.
The City’s labor relations team is currently in the process of meeting and conferring with unions representing the existing City workforce, a needed step to impose a vaccination requirement. This process is not required for new employees, so the City can move more quickly.
“We look forward to negotiating in good faith with our labor partners about how to get every City employee vaccinated with the utmost urgency,” Mayor Steinberg said.
The mayor added: “As a respected community leader just said to us on a Zoom call: ‘I’d rather you be mad at me than dead.’”
