Applications are now open for a new program funded by the City of Sacramento to improve access to high-quality internet coverage by providing qualifying residents with free wifi, computers, hotspots and training.

Eligible residents include those who are low-income and eligible for public assistance programs and live either in the City of Sacramento or the service territory of the Sacramento Municipal Utility District, also a partner in the program. Households complete a screening application. If approved, they are considered for free internet access or hotspots, computers and digital literacy training.

The three-year program is being run by United Way California Capital Region with support from the City of Sacramento, SMUD and the City of Rancho Cordova.

“Closing the digital divide is crucial to ensuring that everyone in our region can access educational and economic opportunity as we emerge from the pandemic,” said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg.
