Mayor Steinberg launches #LightSactoBlue campaign to honor healthcare workers
Old City Hall, Memorial Auditorium and the Capitol Mall were bathed in blue light on Wednesday as Mayor Darrell Steinberg launched an ongoing campaign to light the city blue in honor of health care workers and first responders.
Other city landmarks like the pedestrian bridge at Sacramento City College, the Old Sacramento tunnel and the Richards Boulevard underpass will also be turning blue this week.
In his Facebook Live address Wednesday night, Mayor Steinberg urged Sacramento residents to join in by displaying blue lights on their homes. The idea was inspired by Great Britain’s blue lighting camping, which began several weeks ago and just this past week turned the tower of Windsor Castle blue.
“Blue is the color of England’s national health service. It’s also the color used by most health care providers in their logos,” Mayor Steinberg said. “It’s considered a calm, steady color, qualities we really need right now.
“Let’s do this not only to show solidarity to our health care workers and first responders, but to all the essential workers whose jobs put them at personal risk on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic.,” Mayor Steinberg added. “They have our backs; let’s have theirs.”
City creative specialist Carlos Eliason, who has been working on the campaign, said those who don’t have blue lights can still participate by writing a sign in blue, tying a blue ribbon around a tree or putting up holiday lights.
