Mayor Steinberg announces re-opening of rotating mayor's office art gallery
Sacramento, CA (Mar. 3, 2023) - Mayor Darrell Steinberg is once again highlighting local artists by hanging their work in his office.
The mayor introduced the rotating exhibits of local artwork when he took office, but they were put on hold during the pandemic due to the lack of visitors in City Hall. Now that the office is once again welcoming people daily for scheduled meetings, anyone who visits the office will see the current featured work.
Mayor Steinberg is working with a Sacramento based artist to curate this featured space with a unique work that will be updated every month. The alcove where they are displayed is centrally located in the public reception area between the mayor’s conference room and his personal office.
March 2023’s featured artist is Jill Estroff, whose painting Lotus Land is based on the lotus blooms in William Land Park. Other notable artists who have been featured in this space include Maren Conrad, Tim Collom, Dan Tran, and Andy Cunningham.
The feature space has also been used to promote good causes. In July 2019, surrealist Dwight T. Head pledged to donate the proceeds from the sale of this painting to the to the Developmental Disabilities Service Organization, which uses the arts to enrich the lives of people with development disabilities. Learn more about their work here. Head was also featured in a Friday Art Break video which took a look at his creative process.
Mayor Steinberg is no stranger to finding ways to support the arts. On top of spearheading the city’s nation-leading $30 million commitment of CARES and American Rescue Plan dollars to help keep the arts afloat during the coronavirus pandemic, the Mayor’s office also created a weekly feature to help promote local artists and arts organizations. Most recently, the mayor’s office worked with SMUD and the City of Sacramento’s Office of Climate Action to create a youth art contest focused on fighting climate change.
