On the morning of June 25, shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld President Trump's travel ban, Mayor Darrell Steinberg stood with members of the Muslim community at the Sacramento office of the Council on American Islamic Relations. He cited Trump's anti-Muslim rhetoric during the presidential campaign, including his call for a "total and complete shutdown on Muslims entering the United States," as evidence that the ban on travel from seven mostly Muslim countries was intended to discriminate on the basis of religion.
