Court ruling on union dues is 'illogical' and allows people to freeload, Mayor says
Mayor Darrell Steinberg joined other elected officials and union leaders on Wednesday, June 27 issue a cry to action after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the requirement that members of public sector unions pay dues even if they opt not to belong to the union.
Steinberg called the 5-4 ruling in Janus vs. AFSCME illogical because it allows workers to enjoy the higher wages and benefits obtained through collective bargaining without paying for them. Well-paying public sector jobs, the result of strong unions, underpin the Sacramento economy.
