California Launches Census 2020 Effort in Sacramento
California has launched its statewide complete count effort with a series of regional convenings across the state, which started here in Sacramento on April 19th.
If you or your organization would like to get involved in Census 2020 in the Sacramento region please visit this website for more details.
The census is one of our nation’s largest and most logistically complex undertakings. The decennial census provides the critical data we need to govern, keep our cities running and ensure that each city, county and state receives its fair share of federal funding and investments. It was great to see so many community organizations and local agencies come together to discuss how we can collaborate to ensure all of our diverse communities are counted.
It is clear that leadership in Washington DC sees our state and our immigrant communities as a target, and the addition of a citizenship question to the 2020 Census is just the latest attempt to further disenfranchise and intimidate. The City of Sacramento has made it clear that we never trade away peoples’ civil rights for money. We will continue to stand beside and advocate on behalf of our immigrant and refugee families.
If we don’t stand together to take on this challenge of ensuring all communities are SAFELY counted, then we risk not only holes in our budgets, but seats in congress as well.
