Sacramento artists invited to apply for mural projects in Aggie Square

Sacramento (April 18, 2024) -The City of Sacramento Office of Arts and Culture, in collaboration with developer Wexford Science + Technology, is seeking qualified professional visual artists to create two murals as part of the UC Davis Aggie Square innovation district.

The opportunity is open to Sacramento area artists and artist teams experienced in studio painting, large-scale designs, environmental designs, or murals. Murals will be designed to honor the region’s background and consider the natural, economic or cultural attributes of the Sacramento region.

“The two murals will be on the ground floor of the first two buildings and should reinforce Aggie Square as a place for creative people to pursue their dreams,” said Travis Sheridan, senior vice president and chief community officer for Wexford Science + Technology. “It is intended for this art to create a feeling of hope and to inspire creativity, discovery, healing and optimism.”

The Office of Arts and Culture is offering support and guidance for applications and panel selection process. Funding and contracting for the privately funded mural project is managed by Wexford.

Those interested in applying can find more background, eligibility and other criteria on the City’s website. Applications are due May 20.

Eligible applications will be reviewed by a diverse panel of community and development stakeholders, as well as art professionals.

An online information session will be held Wednesday, May 1 from 6 to 7 p.m. Register online here. The session will be recorded for those unable to attend live.

About Aggie Square

Aggie Square will bring together university research and teaching, industry and the community to create opportunities across the region. It will be home to research programs, private industry partners, classrooms, student housing and public-facing programs that engage local communities and entrepreneurs.

When complete, Phase 1 of the mixed-use, innovation district located on the UC Davis Sacramento campus, will include 1.2 million square feet of new research, classroom, office and residential space across five buildings and a parking structure with the first buildings opening in early 2025. Wexford Science + Technology serves as Aggie Square’s developer and UC Davis as the anchor tenant.

With the support of the Office of Arts and Culture, UC Davis will open another round of applications for two additional indoor murals for Aggie Square public art this summer.
