What should the future of Truxel Bridge look like? Here's how to provide input

The City of Sacramento launched a feasibility study in July 2023 for the Truxel Bridge, a planned new bridge with multiple transportation modes across the lower American River connecting Truxel Road and Sequoia Pacific Boulevard.

The City is now seeking feedback with an online community questionnaire. Community members are invited to share their thoughts on design elements of Truxel Bridge through the survey which is through Feb. 26.

“A new bridge at Truxel Road will serve as a vital connection for those walking, biking, riding public transit, or driving between locations north and south of the American River,” said Fedolia “Sparky” Harris, Principal Planner with the Department of Public Works.

The feasibility study is the first phase for the planned bridge and includes preliminary engineering, environmental analysis, and community outreach.

To gather early input on various elements of the bridge and feasibility study, the City hosted its first community workshop on Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at Read Academy. More than sixty community members attended and participated in the small group discussion.

“The goal of the community outreach process is to engage residents including those who have been historically underrepresented who regularly cross the Lower American River to better understand the community’s travel patterns, needs, and concerns in an effort to maximize the user experience on the future bridge,” Harris said.

This phase of the project is funded by a Caltrans Sustainable Transportation Planning grant obtained in partnership with the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG) and supplemented by local funds from the Sacramento Regional Transit District and developer fees.

City Council in 2013 adopted the American River Crossings Alternatives Study which included a new crossing at Truxel Road as one of the three preferred crossing alternatives. The Truxel Bridge was chosen to address limited connectivity across the lower American River, which creates a barrier to economic activity, land use development, economic growth, and job access.
