Mayor Steinberg's choices for leadership team and appointments unanimously confirmed

Sacramento, CA (Jan. 10, 2024) - Two of the youngest members of the Sacramento City Council were appointed by Mayor Darrell Steinberg and unanimously confirmed by the City Council Tuesday to serve as part of his leadership team for 2024.

2024 Vice Mayor Caity Maple represents District 5 which includes Oak Park, Curtis Park and Hollywood Park.

Steinberg named District 5 representative Caity Maple as Vice Mayor and District 3 representative Karina Talamantes as Mayor Pro Tempore for 2024. The Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore chair meetings in the Mayor’s absence and often represent the City in public if the Mayor cannot be present. District 6 Councilmember Eric Guerra served as Vice Mayor in 2023, and Councilmember Mai Vang (District 8) was Mayor Pro Tempore last year.

“Vice Mayor Maple and Mayor Pro Tem Talamantes represent a new generation of leadership in the Sacramento region,” Mayor Steinberg said. “They have worked hard in their first year as Councilmembers, and I’m sure they will continue this dedication citywide. While we have much work left to do as a region, we should take this moment as a step in the right direction for gender equality.”

The remaining appointments approved at the Council are for the formal committees that make up its governance structure. Those committees are Law & Legislation, Personnel & Public Employees, Budget & Audit, and the Racial Equity Committee.

Mayor Steinberg’s leadership choices reflect a generational change in the City Council, which for the first time became majority female with the election last year of Lisa Kaplan, Talamantes, and Maple.

“In making these appointments, Mayor Steinberg recognized the power that we have as a majority-women City Council in advancing meaningful and inclusive policies that benefit our entire community,” said Maple.

The Mayor also appointed members to represent the city on regional governance bodies like the Sacramento Area Council of Governments and joint powers authorities like the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency.

Here is a list of committee appointments for 2024:
