Sacramento has a new emergency alert system. Are you receiving important alerts?
Sacramento, CA (Sep. 7, 2023) - As Sacramento County updates its emergency alert system, the City of Sacramento’s Office of Emergency Management is urging residents to ensure they are enrolled in “Sacramento Alert,” a service that notifies residents of emergencies and important updates.
The service, which can send phone calls, text messages and emails, is available to residents in Sacramento, Yolo and Placer counties or anyone who wants to receive updates.
Sacramento County on Jan. 1, along with incorporated cities within its jurisdiction, transitioned to a new emergency alert system. This means to receive emergency and community alerts, residents must go to www.sacramento-alert.org and create an account before October 1, 2023.
This does not affect those who registered at www.sacramento-alert.org on or after Jan. 1, 2023.
“Signing up for Sacramento Alert is a simple yet highly effective way to protect yourself and your family during emergencies,” said Daniel Bowers, the City’s emergency management director. “It takes only a few minutes to sign up for alerts that will help safeguard you and your family should there be an emergency. We encourage everyone to register.”
To sign up, people need to register their contact information on the service’s website and opt-in to receive notifications and alerts. Here are the steps:
Visit Sacramento-alert.org and provide basic information, select a username, set a password and security question
Select how you prefer to be contacted, such as cell phone, text, and/or landline
Register one or multiple addresses such as home or work address
This does not affect wireless emergency alerts which are sent to connected devices regardless if they sign up for Sacramento Alert.
“Check with your friends and neighbors, make sure they are signed up as well,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg. “We always do better when facing adversity if we face it together.”
The City also uses Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor and email announcements along with news releases to the media to provide updates about emergencies and general news.
