A Warm Welcome - Mayor Steinberg interviews his new council colleagues

Sacramento, CA (Mar. 9, 2023) - In 2023 Sacramento City Council welcomed three new councilmembers to the dais. As part of a way to help residents get to know the new councilmembers, Mayor Darrell Steinberg talked with each of them for his interview series, ‘A Warm Welcome.’ The live interviews with new members Lisa Kaplan, Caity Maple and Karina Talamantes are all shared below.

Councilmember Lisa Kaplan

In this interview Councilmember Kaplan shares her public service journey, how her mother influenced her approach to getting things done and her connection to the #MeToo movement in Sacramento. Mayor Steinberg discusses with Kaplan her philosophy on limited city resources and addressing the biggest issues facing the city, like housing and economic development, and how her faith has contributed to her passion and drive for public service.

Kaplan was a trustee on Natomas Unified School Board for twenty years, is lawyer by trade, and also worked in the Legislature, where she first met then Assemblymember Darrell Steinberg.

Councilmember Caity Maple

(Producer's Note: Apologies for the audio issues in the interview with Councilmember Maple. We had some technical issues with our wireless mics that did not show up during testing. It was mostly addressed after the first five minutes of the broadcast. We have trimmed the live stream to the point where the audio was mostly working as intended.)

Councilmember Maple shares her thoughts on how we grow our economy to ensure that we connect that benefit to residents and neighborhoods, focusing on being nimble while the city addresses issues like housing and homelessness and the importance of partnerships and community engagement.

Maple gives some additional background on her experiences running her own business, working in the Legislature, working for a cannabis company and her journey from community college to UC Davis and working full time while going to school.

Councilmember Karina Talamantes

Councilmember Talamantes discusses her political philosophy and her approach to working on the issues facing the newly redrawn District 3, running a vaccination clinic during the pandemic and her experience working in language access, and how she was inspired by Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign in 2016 to begin her political journey.

Talamantes grew up in a small town working in almond groves and canning olives. Her career has taken her from helping students connect with careers as a counselor to the Obama White House working on a major education initiative. She has served on the Sacramento County Board of Education, and most recently was the Chief of Staff for former District 1 councilmember Angelique Ashby.
