Sacramento's watering schedule changes on Mar. 1. Here's what you need to know

Sacramento, CA (Feb. 22, 2023) - The City of Sacramento’s Department of Utilities is reminding residents and business owners that, starting March 1, landscapes can be watered twice a week rather than just once a week.

The change allows people to use their sprinklers on lawns and plants two days a week based on their address: Residents and business owners who have odd-numbered addresses can water on Tuesdays and Saturdays; people who have even-numbered addresses can water on Wednesdays and Sundays.

“As the days get longer — and lawns get thirstier coming out of their dormant state — it’s important to remember the City’s seasonal watering schedule.” said said William Granger, a water conservation coordinator for the City.

People can use their sprinklers on automatic timers before 10 a.m. and after 7 p.m., but should not to allow water to run off into sidewalks or gutters.

Watering by hand can be done any day regardless of the watering schedule.

The spring and summer schedule lasts until Oct. 31. During the fall and winter schedule — from Nov. 1 to Feb. 28 — sprinkler usage is limited to one day a week, on a weekend day.

“Despite the recent series of storms that hit California in January, we are far from being out of danger when it comes to drought conditions,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg. “The city is continuing to invest in helping residents switch to drought friendly landscaping. It takes everyone to meet our conservation goals.”

Residents and businesses must follow the City’s watering schedule, which has been in place since 2017 and has helped reduced water usage by up to 30 percent.
