Mayor appoints council leadership team, committee positions for 2023
Sacramento, CA (Jan. 10, 2023) - Meeting for the first time in 2023, the Sacramento City Council Tuesday confirmed the Mayor’s appointments for Council leadership posts, committees and commissions.
Mayor Steinberg named Councilmember Eric Guerra (District 6) as Vice Mayor and Councilmember Mai Vang (District 8) as Mayor Pro Tempore for 2023. Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore appointments typically last for a calendar year. The Vice Mayor and Mayor Pro Tempore chair meetings in the Mayor’s absence and often represent the City in public if the Mayor is unable to be present. Newly elected California State Senator Angelique Ashby served as Vice Mayor in 2022, and Guerra was Mayor Pro Tempore.
“These titles are honorary and substantive,” Mayor Steinberg said. “We’ve got a great team and we will move forward together.”
The remaining appointments approved at Council are for the formal committees that make up the governance structure of the Sacramento City Council. Those committees are Law & Legislation, Personnel & Public Employees, Budget & Audit and the Racial Equity Committee.
All of Mayor Steinberg’s appointments were unanimously approved by his colleagues on city council.
Guerra previously served as Vice Mayor in 2019. Eric Guerra was re-elected in 2020 and first elected to city council in a special election in 2015. District 6 encompasses Tahoe Park, Tallac Village, Campus Commons, Sierra Oaks, Glen Elder and Little Saigon. Guerra will also serve on the Law & Legislation Committee and Budget & Audit Committee. He will represent the City of Sacramento on the Homeless Policy Council, Sacramento Employment & Training Agency, the Regional Solid Waste Authority and Transportation Authority among others.
This appointment is Vang’s first leadership appointment on City Council. Vang was elected in 2020 to represent neighborhoods in South Sacramento including Meadowview, Valley Hi, Detroit and Parkway. Vang will continue to co-chair the Racial Equity Committee with Mayor Steinberg and will also sit on the Budget & Audit Committee. She will represent the City on the Sacramento Area Council of Governments (SACOG), the Air Quality Management District, and the Library Authority to name a few.
