Sacramento to receive $4.7 million in state funds for 'California Creative Corps'

Sacramento (Aug. 26, 2022) - The City of Sacramento’s Office of Arts and Culture recently was selected to receive $4.75 million from the California Arts Council to implement the state’s new California Creative Corps program for the capital region, which includes Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, Alpine and Solano Counties.
“This award not only reflects the incredible city staff we have in the Office of Arts and Culture but also tells us that the City of Sacramento is 100% committed to maintaining and supporting our world class artists and creatives,” said Mayor Darrell Steinberg.
The California Creative Corps program is a $60 million effort by Gov. Gavin Newsom and the state legislature to increase public awareness related to water and energy conservation, climate mitigation, emergency preparedness and relief and recovery.
The City’s Office of Arts and Culture received the highest award amount possible for a single organization from the program.
“The creative community is uniquely positioned to help people understand and engage with some of the most urgent and complex issues of our time,” said Megan Van Voorhis, the City’s creative economy manager. “In an era when we are flooded with information and regularly having to separate truth from fiction, story, song, art and dance can create an opening for us to empathize with one another, see things from alternate perspectives and create new pathways for change.”
The Office of Arts and Culture will work with its regional partners in Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, Alpine and Solano Counties to redistribute grants to artists collectives, nonprofit social service/civic organizations, arts nonprofits, units of local government and tribal governments for creative campaigns, according to Van Voorhis.
