Applications are open for organizations tackling food insecurity
Sacramento (July 19, 2022) - Food-assistance organizations and small businesses now can apply for grants of up to $200,000 to help address food insecurity in the City of Sacramento.
Managed by the Office of Innovation and Economic Development, the $1 million “Food Justice” grant program is funded through the federal American Rescue Plan. The program was developed through the Food Justice Task Force led by Mayor Darrell Steinberg and Councilmember Mai Vang.
“The Food Justice grant program is our commitment to help elevate community-centered solutions to address food insecurity in Sacramento,” Vang said. “In order to improve access to healthy, affordable, and culturally appropriate food in our community, we must uplift and invest in community organizations, local minority and women-owned businesses and urban farmers to build a more resilient food system that reflects the rich diversity of our community.”
Grant funds can be used to support services and programs such as starting culturally relevant farmers’ markets, expanding food literacy programs or increasing community gardening. Funds can also be used for operational support, capital investments, capacity building and technical assistance.
Applicants must provide services within high-need areas or to vulnerable populations. Applications are being accepted until 4 p.m. Aug. 24.
“The grant program directly responds to the negative economic impacts of COVID-19 by providing households and individuals with assistance for food,” said Development Project Manager Ginger Weagraff. “It will improve access to healthy and culturally diverse foods and invests in the local food system.”
