First group of winners announced in Sacramento's Carbon Zero Art Contest
Sacramento (June 6, 2022) The results are in for the Carbon Zero Art Contest. The contest, which ran from January to April of this year, gave area students a chance to submit art that highlighted the urgency for climate action in Sacramento and the importance of a sustainable future. The winner’s gallery is now live on engagesac.org/carbonzero.
Winning submissions will be featured in the online gallery now through the end of the year. The first group of winners includes artists in the 19-24-year-old age bracket. Additional winners in the 14-15-year-old and 16-18-year-old age brackets will be announced and showcased in the coming weeks.
The art contest is a collaboration between the Office of Mayor Darrell Steinberg, SMUD, and the City of Sacramento’s Office of Climate Action. Representatives from each of the partners and a local artist and a high school art teacher made up the panel of judges.
Each group of winners had a chance to win up to $500 for their submission. Their art may also be used in future climate action efforts by the City of Sacramento or SMUD.
The first place winning artist in the 19-24 age group, Jessica Nguyen, is a third-year Sacramento State student majoring in Computer Science and minoring in Education. She wrote in her submission, “With all of the technological advancements in renewable energy, I believe that we should start transitioning away from harmful sources of energy.”
All entries accepted into the contest promote sustainability, demonstrate the need to reach carbon neutrality (known as carbon zero) or help others understand the urgency of fighting climate change. The artwork and the contest will also help elevate the perspective from young people.
