New North Natomas Aquatics Complex gives Sacramento a new place to play and compete

Sacramento (April 19, 2022) The long-awaited North Natomas Aquatics Complex officially opened this month, bringing Sacramento its first Olympic-length pool. Visit the city’s aquatic center webpage to learn more about how to enjoy this new community amenity.

A stainless steel flip flop with a soft coating provides a place to meet and hang out. The piece was designed by Natomas artist Terrence Martin to fulfill the city’s public art requirement.

The aquatics center includes a 25-yard recreational pool, zero-depth entry splash pool, waterslides, locker rooms, a grandstand, diving boards, snack bars and places for families to spread out in the shade. It connects to a community center overlooking the pools.

Mayor Darrell Steinberg joined Vice Mayor Angelique Ashby and numerous other elected officials and community leaders from Natomas and throughout the city on April 19 to officially cut the ribbon on the complex, a joint venture between the City and the Natomas Unified School District.

Mayor Steinberg praised Vice Mayor Ashby, who has worked since 2014 to get the facility built, and said he would push to see that similarly scaled athletic facilities are built throughout Sacramento.

“What this represents to me is not only a tremendous benefit to the residents of Natomas but also a commitment by the City that we are going to be the center of youth sports activities,” Mayor Steinberg said.

Chris Evans, Superintendent of the Natomas Unified School District, said the facility would provide opportunities for competitive swimmers and also for teaching basic water safety and swim skills to children growing up throughout the city.

“There’s a strong likelihood that in a few years we’re going to be watching the Olympics and see one of our kids,” Evans said.
