Mayor, Chancellor May lead groundbreaking on Aggie Square innovation campus
Sacramento (Feb. 16, 2022) The Aggie Square innovation campus on Stockton Boulevard and Second Avenue in Sacramento will start construction in the coming weeks after a celebratory groundbreaking Wednesday kicked off by UC Davis Chancellor Gary May and Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg.
Local, state and federal elected officials participated, along with leadership from Wexford Science + Technology, the project developer; and community activists who worked to ensure the $1-billion project would benefit residents in the surrounding zip codes.
Mayor Steinberg and Councilmembers Eric Guerra and Jay Schenirer worked with the community and leadership from UC Davis and Wexford to craft a Community Benefits Partnership Agreement that includes $50 million for affordable housing, including $10 million specifically to help residents stay in their homes. At least 20 percent and eventually 25 percent of the 3,600 permanent jobs at Aggie Square will be filled by residents of surrounding zip codes, who will also be offered job training.
Construction on the first three buildings is expected to start in April, with a completion date of late 2024.
Aggie Square includes office and lab space in which university researchers can collaborate with private sector tenants, student housing, community spaces, classrooms and the Alice Water Institute for Edible Education.
