New hires, organization in Mayor's office aim to serve you better. Here's how.
Sacramento, CA (Dec. 21, 2022) - Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s Office is gearing up for 2023 with new staff members and a sharpened focus aimed at achieving the greatest possible community engagement and responsiveness.
Because of a quirk of the redistricting process, some neighborhoods in Sacramento will have Mayor Steinberg as their direct City Council representative for the next two years. These “deferred” neighborhoods of the city were moved into new districts but will not vote for their new representative until 2024. Until that time, they will not officially be represented by the Council person for the new district. The Mayor’s Office is now the direct Council representative for neighborhoods that include much of the River District, East Sacramento, River Park Colonial Heights, Lawrence Park and parts of Valley Hi and Meadowview in South Sacramento.
Due to the increased workload anticipated over the next two years, Mayor Steinberg added two experienced staff members, Miesha Ross and Jocelyn Navarro. To meet all of Mayor Steinberg’s staff, send them an email or learn about their backgrounds you can visit EngageSac.Org/About-Us.
The Mayor’s Office of Community Engagement (MOCE) — previously the Office of Civic Engagement — is now led by Chinua Rhodes, an experienced community organizer who also serves as the president of the Sacramento City Unified School District board. MOCE includes staff members who work on external projects and events and those who respond to constituent concerns.
The Office of Community Engagement also houses Mayor Steinberg’s robust internship program. Interns ranging in age from high-school to graduate students have gained valuable skills in the mayor’s office, and many have gone on to work in state and local government. MOCE actively recruits interns through community groups such as Improve Your Tomorrow along with the Political Science programs at Sacramento State and UC Davis, and the UC Center Sacramento, which brings students from throughout the University of California system to the capital to study politics and government.
In the new year, EngageSac.org, the Mayor’s news and information website, will have a dedicated page for internships with the application, the basic requirements and what sort of internships are currently available. The new page, EngageSac.org/Internships will be up and running in early 2023.
