Mayor Darrell Steinberg's statement in support of the people of Iran
Sacramento, CA (Oct. 22, 2022) - Saturday, on the steps of the California State Capital building, Mayor Darrell Steinberg stood in solidarity with Iranians and Iranian Americans fighting for their rights and against oppression.
Here is his full statement:
Today, Sacramento stands in solidarity with our Iranian American Community and with Iranians struggling against oppression and outrageous acts of brutality within Iran.
On Sept. 16, 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in custody after being apprehended by Iran’s “morality police” for improperly wearing a hijab. In response, protesters within Iran have bravely demonstrated for an end to the nation’s mandatory hijab laws and other regulations that have stifled freedom of expression and human rights within Iran.
As a community, we must always stand up for human rights and stand in solidarity with those facing oppression, be it close to home or elsewhere. The reaction to these protests by the Iranian government has been unconscionable. Young people have been subjected to brutal violence by Iran’s security forces, including mass arrests, beatings, and deadly force.
Iranian Americans form a pillar of Sacramento’s civic culture. They are leaders in business, academia, and increasingly, in civic life. I am proud to recognize their impact on our city and region and offer our support for those who are fearful for the safety of loved ones as they navigate life under a brutal regime.
Together, we call on Iran to stop the violence against peaceful protesters and listen to the Iranian people as they demand their freedom from such oppression.
