WATCH: Mayor Steinberg delivers 2021 State of the City Address

Mayor Darrell Steinberg delivered his 2021 State of the City address on Wednesday, June 30, calling on Sacramento to become the first city in the nation to enact an ordinance establishing a right to housing and an obligation on those living outdoors to accept it if offered. Watch the speech or read the text below to learn more about why the mayor believes this is the only way to get at the root of the homelessness crisis in our city and nation. Mayor Steinberg also outlined new investments in neighborhoods, youth and small business, including an awards program to get people to come back to work and shop downtown.

The speech was preceded by live arts performances, including a special appearance by Sacramento’s Alexandra Huynh, who was recently named National Youth Poet Laureate. Mayor Steinberg also announced the recipient of the 2021 Mort Friedman Civic Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to public service.
