We need your voice! Sacramento Youth Commission recruitment is open now
Want to get involved with improving quality of life for Sacramento youth? Applications are now open to fill multiple spots on the City of Sacramento Youth Commission (SYC).
“This is an opportunity to join a diverse team of young people who are passionate about social justice,” said Shatara Travis of Youth, Parks, & Community Enrichment Department (YPCE). “Sacramento youth have the opportunity to advise local city leaders on issues that directly affect them.”
The various powers and duties of SYC members range from promoting City youth services and functions to conducting studies and investigations on youth programs. Each of the eight Councilmembers select two seats with the remaining three seats selected by the Mayor. The term lasts for two years.
“We cannot wait for adult leaders to enact the change we wish to see,” said SYC Chair Naomi Piper-Pell, District 6. “They tell us we’re the leaders of tomorrow, but in reality we are the leaders of today and we must take the torch and make the change we want.”
SYC members are expected to make a time commitment of up to 10 hours a month and be open to learning and willing to contribute. To be eligible, applicants must be between the ages of 14 to 22 at the time of appointment and must reside or attend high school within City limits. Applications are due Tuesday, November 30.
The SYC is facilitated by YPCE. City staff will host a virtual webinar on Thursday, November 18 at 5 p.m. where residents can learn more about the Commission and application process. Register online to hear from current SYC members and ask questions.
