Sacramento (Sept. 14, 2020) With the smoky air as a backdrop, Mayor Steinberg and West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon teamed up for a press conference highlighting their cities’ aggressive goals for fighting climate change and calling for leadership at the national level.

They were joined by incoming SMUD CEO and General Manager Paul Lau, and Alberto Ayala, executive director of the Sacramento Air Quality Management District.

The Sacramento City Council last month embraced the recommendations of the Mayors’ Commission on Climate Change led Mayors Steinberg and Cabaldon and directed city staff to move quickly to implement such measures as electrifying new building construction and making some streets off-limits to cars.

Earlier Monday morning, Mayor Steinberg appeared on MSNBC’s Meet the Press Daily to call on the federal government to provide climate leadership as the West Coast faces catastrophic fires exacerbated by record heat and prolonged drought.
