The Sacramento City Council and the Sacramento Youth Commission will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday, June 9 2020 for the first time in Sacramento history. The city council will hear youth perspective and insight on the implementation of federal CARES Act funding for youth programming.

In preparing for this meeting, youth commissioners created a survey where they asked youth throughout Sacramento what was important to them. Priorities at the top of the list were youth employment opportunities, COVID-19 prevention, mental health resources and educational enrichment.

Mayor Steinberg previously wrote a letter outlining initial ideas around how the City Council could spend the CARES Act funding while staying true to the vision of inclusive economic development and investing in Sacramento youth. Recently the city council allocated $28.5 million in CARES Act funding, including $2 million for summer learning in partnership with regional school districts.

The CARES Act is a federal stimulus bill and includes very specific strings attached to the allocation of these funds. In general CARES Act money cannot be spent on previously budgeted programming and must be used for COVID-19 related recovery and relief efforts.

You can view the agenda for this meeting online and watch the meeting live through the City of Sacramento website.
