Mayor Steinberg sworn in for second term alongside three new Councilmembers

Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg was sworn in for a second four-year term Tuesday alongside three new colleagues, Mai Vang, Katie Valenzuela and Sean Loloee.

The three newcomers will join Steinberg and existing councilmembers Jay Schenirer, Rick Jennings, Jeff Harris, Angelique Ashby and Eric Guerra, who also just won reelection and was sworn in on Tuesday as well.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, the members delivered their oaths over Zoom. Mayor Steinberg congratulated the three new Council members, calling them all “barrier breakers in their own right.”

After his wife, Julie, swore him in, Mayor Steinberg said: “I want to thank especially the people of Sacramento for returning me to this high office. I know every day that I’m here that these are not our offices, these are not our seats, these are the people’s seats. And we are temporary stewards of those seats, and we do the very best we can in the time that we have to try to make the lives of the people we represent, all the people, but especially the people who need help, to make their lives better.”

He and other Council members emphasized the importance of working together and collaborating — even in the face of philosophical differences.

Vang will represent much of south Sacramento, including Meadowview, where she grew up as the eldest of 16 children. Valenzuela, a midtown resident and the Council’s only renter, will represent District 4, which includes downtown, midtown and South Natomas. Loloee, a businessman and owner of two supermarkets in north Sacramento and Del Paso Heights,, will represent the District 2 neighborhoods north of the American River.

In the days before Tuesday’s swearing in, Mayor Steinberg conducted Facebook Live interviews with all three of his new colleagues. Watch and learn more about their life histories and what they hope to accomplish for the residents of Sacramento.
