Mayor proclaims April as Arts, Culture & Creativity Month, advocates for creative investment as a core city service
Mayor Steinberg kicked off a momentous push for the arts at the California State Capitol on Tuesday, April 23 by proclaiming April, “Arts, Culture & Creativity Month,” in Sacramento.
Californians for the Arts, a statewide arts advocacy group, organized a full day with over 200 delegates meeting more than 65 legislators to show the impact that arts has in California in education, recidivism, mental health and healthcare. Their program also included visits to the rally on the south steps of the capitol building by Speaker Anthony Rendon, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond and many others.
A 2019 Otis Report on the Creative Economy, puts California’s creative economy output at $500 billion, which includes 2.6 million jobs and $227.8 billion in labor income.
On Monday, April 29, Mayor Steinberg will kick off a panel discussion on the creative economy at The Atrium, a creative co-working space in East Sacramento. It will be moderated by Bill Blake from AMS Planning & Research.
Participants will include Julie Baker, Executive Director of Californians for the Arts, Jack Mitchell, Chief Visual and Performing Arts Coordinator for the State Department of Education, Niva Flor, Interim Chief Giving Officer of the Sacramento Region Community Foundation for the discussion and brainstorm exploring ways to finance the arts and invigorate the economy. Tickets are limited so please make sure you RSVP.
