City changes rules on what plastics residents can put in recycling bins

Before you throw plastic in your recycling bin, check underneath for the number. The City of Sacramento has changed its rules for what plastics it will accept.

The market for recyclables has tightened, largely because of new limits on what types of food containers China will take, Sacramento has created a new Waste Wizard feature on our website where you can type in the name of the item you would like to recycle and see if it's permitted.  Below is a description of what plastics can still go in the big blue bin. Not allowed: Styrofoam or packing peanuts, clam shell trays, deli food containers and plastic bags. Plastics numbered 4,5 and 6 have to go in the garbage, not the recycling.

  • All CRV containers accepted

  • Containers 1 -3

  • Soda bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, etc.

  • Buckets, pails and crates

  • Laundry baskets
